Summary
Description
Fra' Angelico, the famous painter, was a prominent figure of the Early Renaissance era. He dedicated his service to God at the Chiesa di San Marco and the 15th-century Dominican monastery nearby, in the company of the fiery preacher Girolamo Savonarola. Discover Angelico's renowned artworks and frescoes as you tour this religious complex from the 15th century.
Fra' Angelico finished the majority of his creations with the title 'Il Beato' (The Blessed). He was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 1984. At the Museo di San Marco, you can observe a variety of his artworks, such as the renowned Deposition of Christ, which showcases a lifelike portrayal of the natural world.
Also present are several remarkable and important frescoes, such as Giovanni Antonio Sogliani's The Miracle Dinner of St. Domenic and Fra' Angelico's Crucifixion and Saints in the previous chapter house. The fresco known as Annunciation is Fra's most renowned creation in this location - and deservedly so!
In the cells, there are numerous religious reliefs and devotional frescoes, all of which provide a stark contrast to the austere rooms that Savonarola—a Dominican friar and preacher—inhabited from 1489 until he crossed the line with the church authorities and was executed in the square.
Discover some objects that belonged to the determined monk who courageously battled against avarice and extravagance - such as a marble memorial built in 1873 by his supporters.
