While it caused massive destruction by wiping out the entire populations of nearby towns, it also led to the preservation of one of the most extensive and well-preserved ruins of an ancient city in history. This city was Pompeii. Today, the remarkable ruins of Pompeii stand as one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy.

Description

The event of Mt. Vesuvius erupting in 79 C.E. was quite paradoxical. It caused massive destruction by wiping out the entire populations of nearby towns, and at the same time, it provided history with an exceptionally well-preserved ruins of an ancient city. This city was Pompeii. These impressive ruins attract a great number of visitors and stand as a popular site in Italy.

At the moment of the eruption of Vesuvius, which was as powerful as 100,000 atomic bombs, life in Pompeii was instantly lost. Paradoxically, the layer of extremely hot ash, along with the absence of moisture, helped in preserving a large part of the city for millennia. Hence, the present view offers a remarkable insight into life during the Roman era.

There are numerous details of daily life. In one of the houses (Sirico's), there is a well-known inscription on the ground, Salve lucru ("Hoş geldiniz, kâr"), and it points to a trade company belonging to Sirico. You may examine wine jars that are marked as Vesuvinum – a wordplay on Vesuvius and the Latin term for wine, vinum. This could very well be the earliest marketing pun known to man!

Having more than 50 hectares available for exploration, visitors have the option to stroll through the Forum while admiring the view of Vesuvius in the distance, or relax under a tree and admire the impressive amphitheater. The remains of the crucial aqueduct, street fountains, public baths, private houses, shops, statues, frescoes, and numerous eerie plaster casts of volcanic-ashes-covered locals are all present!
