Enter the Sant Pau Hospital.
In the beginning of the 1900s, the creative architect Domènech i Montaner constructed something groundbreaking. Instead of a medieval hospital, he created a contemporary hospital with architectural and natural magnificence to encourage mental healing of patients. The idea was unconventional at the time and it remains innovative; discover the extraordinary Art Nouveau complex that he planned.
The estate consists of 16 pavilions, featuring subterranean passages and a distinct style highlighted by mosaic artwork, vibrant roof tiles, elaborate arches, and whimsical, fluid lines. The presence of inner courts and lush vegetation reflects Montaner’s belief in the therapeutic role of flowers and trees in comparison to a standard clinical setting. It stands as a masterpiece, yet without an intimidating aura.The hospital, now situated in the northeast of the district, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
