Description

The charm and design of St. John Lateran will impress and captivate you. It is the most ancient basilica in Christianity and originates from the 4th century. Meticulously restored in the 18th century, it serves as the Pope's cathedral. The blend of spiritual importance and aesthetic appeal makes it a top destination for tourists in Rome.

When you see the outside, you'll recognize that you're about to step into one of the most magnificent basilicas worldwide. The grand neo-Classical front features huge marble statues of Jesus and saints, towering above. On the right side is The Holy Door, which the Pope unlocks only once every 25 years, and in the middle is a massive bronze door that was once part of the Senate in the Roman Forum. However, the magnificence doesn't stop at the doors.

As soon as you enter, you will be amazed by the vastness, magnificence, and beauty of the structure. The main part of the building invites you under its arched ceilings, while sunlight pours in through tall windows. Surrounded by two aisles and remarkable marble statues that enhance the straight lines, the layout appears to guide you towards the rounded apse.

The design is detailed, lovely and diverse. Make sure to glance upwards – the gilded coffered ceiling showcases the heraldic symbols of Popes Pius IV and Pius V.

The building in its current state mostly originates from the 1700s, although there exist artifacts and remains from past periods: a stunning gothic altar from the 1300s, two gilded bronze columns from the second century, and - remarkably - the Sacred Steps. These stairs were ascended by Jesus during the Passion and were brought to Rome many centuries in the past.

It is a place with a rich history and captivating beauty, attracting individuals of all beliefs and backgrounds.
